White Dinner in Paris »

5 septembre 2005

Hello my dear foreign friends (mostly Japanese friends),

Some of you know that when I was living in Tokyo, I created a website for my French friends and family to share with them my life in Tokyo. My plan is now to continue and share with you my life in Paris.
I guess that my articles won’t be as long as the one I used to write when I was in Tokyo (I was writing in French at that time!)
Anyway, I really want to share as much as I can so that you can travel a bit with me.

Today I wanted to talk to you about the White Dinner which was on Thursday June 23rd. It’s a very special picnic (actually it’s more a dinner for we have to bring our tables and chairs) which you can participate to only if someone invites you. It takes place once a year and no one knows where it will be until ten minutes before the dinner.
Everyone has to be dressed in white.

I was invited by one of my friend, Yves, who has been participating to this dinner for a few years. We were 5 of my friends and I. Yves also knew a lot of other people participating.
At 6:00 pm, Yves sent me a mail telling me where we were supposed to meet. I had to be at 7:30 pm near the Pompidou Center (that’s in the center of Paris). When we all arrived to the first meeting point, we followed Yves to another place just in front of the Hotel de Ville. When we arrived there, there were already around 500 people dressed in white waiting to know where the dinner would take place. At 7:50 pm, Yves finally told us that the dinner would take place in front of Notre-Dame (sur le parvis).
So we had 10 minutes to go there by foot (carrying our tables, chairs and foods), dress-up out tables and start to eat.
These kind of huge meeting of people (there were 2 750 people) are forbidden so we had to be very quick. Once every 2 750 people is sited, it’s much more difficult for the police to ask us to move.

Now imagine, you’re a tourist, it’s 8:00 pm, you’re in Paris, in front of one of the most beautiful cathedral in the world, the one of the hunchback, you’re taking pictures like a whole bunch of other tourists there and then you see hundreds of people dressed in white carrying their house with them, rushing to the center and starting to open tables, chairs, putting tablecloth with crockery, forks and spoons and opening champagne. I think you would be quite astonished!!!!
My friends had cooked an excellent dinner and it was very convivial (there was not much space in between each rows!!)
I hope you did understand all my explanation, and for more comprehension, go and have a look at my pictures.

Well, it took me quite a long to write this e-mail. I hope to write you another one very soon.
I’ve been traveling a bit during the summer. I spent a weekend at a friend’s house near Avignon (south of France). She has a lovely house in a typical French village. Have a look at my pictures.

Bisous
